Duct wrap and register boots
Insulation on trunk lines and boots is sampled, wetted and cut free in short lengths, then bagged inside the enclosure.

Furnace ducts, register boots and heating pipes in an older home may be wrapped in insulation that contains asbestos, and MDH lists all three among household materials to check. We remove positive wrap so your heating contractor can replace equipment or rework the ducts.
Minnesota requires an MDH-licensed contractor for friable pipe wrap that runs more than 10 linear feet, and for friable material that covers more than 6 square feet of any other part. Your furnace installer or plumber is no exception. An owner living in their own single-family house may do this work alone without a license, but MDH strongly recommends hiring a licensed contractor. Our crews do this work in Burnsville, Savage and Prior Lake.

When an old furnace is coming out, the insulation on and around it is tested before the HVAC crew disconnects anything.
Pipe wrap comes off wet, fittings included, so a plumber can cut and replace pipe without disturbing it.
Maybe only a couple of feet of wrap is torn, well under the state line. Being too small to regulate doesn’t make it harmless, MDH warns, and it advises licensed removal for asbestos material of any size.
A furnace can sit in a basement, a utility room or a hall closet. A small space still gets a full plastic enclosure and negative air.
When the furnace needs to stay off during removal, we set the shut-off and the restart with you and your HVAC contractor before work begins, so nobody is surprised by a cold house.
The enclosure stays standing until clearance air samples have been taken. Afterward you receive the lab’s air report and the waste manifest to keep with your furnace records.
