Asbestos Removal in Prior Lake

Whether it is a dated bathroom or a house coming down, a Prior Lake asbestos job starts with a lab sample. We handle the testing and the removal of confirmed material, see that the state notice is filed and haul the waste to a landfill that takes asbestos.

Roughly a fifth of Prior Lake’s homes are older than 1980. The city’s biggest building decade came later, in the 2000s, when about a quarter of today’s homes went up.

Asbestos testing

Testing in Prior Lake scales with the job. A bathroom update samples only the surfaces in the way, while a teardown needs the whole house inspected, and our asbestos testing page explains each.

Popcorn ceilings

Sprayed popcorn texture is on MDH’s list of home materials to check. Got a positive sample from a Prior Lake ceiling? The sealed-room method we use is laid out under popcorn ceiling removal.

Prior Lake housing

Owners live in about 6 in 7 occupied Prior Lake homes, and close to 9 in 10 homes are one-unit homes. Half the housing here dates from 1998 or later, the median year built, so the older part of the stock is where asbestos questions come in.

Homes from the 1960s and 1970s

Roughly 1 in 10 homes here went up during the 1970s, and about 1 in 18 during the 1960s. Houses of that age can have textured ceilings, floor tile and mastic, joint compound and duct insulation, all materials on MDH’s list, so a sample is the place to start.

Demolition permits in Prior Lake

Prior Lake uses one application for demolition and for moving a house. Its demolition permit requirements include MPCA notification with asbestos program approval, and it tells you to submit MPCA’s Notification of Intent to Perform a Demolition 10 days before applying for the permit.

Removing it first

Prior Lake’s form gets the paperwork moving. MPCA’s rule puts a gap of at least two days between the last of the abatement and the first swing of the excavator. Should any asbestos remain in part of the house being razed, MPCA treats the whole of that part’s rubble as asbestos waste.

Frequently asked questions

How much asbestos needs a licensed contractor?

MDH’s rules stop below three amounts, yet MDH warns that a small amount is not automatically safe. For a house, the amounts are friable pipe covering of more than 10 linear feet, friable material spread across more than 6 square feet of any other surface and, for material that can’t be sized by length or area, more than 1 cubic foot. Any one of them is enough to require a licensed contractor, unless an owner living in a single-family house does the work. MDH still strongly recommends a licensed contractor even then.

Does finding asbestos mid-project let work start sooner?

No. Uncovering asbestos mid-remodel isn’t an emergency under MDH rules, so the licensed contractor still files the notice and waits the full five days before removal.

What should I get from the contractor?

MDH’s guidance for homeowners starts before the job, with the contractor’s Minnesota license and certificates for the workers and supervisor. It ends after the job, with the MDH permit, each waste manifest and the lab report on the air samples. Keep that set with your Prior Lake house records.
