Joint compound and tape
The compound at seams, corners and patches is sampled before any cutting. Where it tests positive, it comes out with the drywall it is on.

Joint compound, drywall tape mud and plaster are on MDH’s lists of home products that can contain asbestos. Before a wall comes out for a bigger kitchen, new wiring or a basement finish, we sample it and remove positive material from the section you need to open.

Each plaster layer is sampled, and positive plaster is taken down to the studs or lath inside a sealed area.
A cut for a panel, a pipe or a new outlet can be enough to disturb asbestos. We clear a clean opening so the electrician or plumber can get to work.
For a full gut, every wall and ceiling surface in the room is cleared in one setup, then cleaned and air tested.
Opening a wall and finding suspect material halfway through a remodel won’t speed anything up, because MDH doesn’t count that as an emergency and the five-day notice still stands. Sample the walls before the first cut and the schedule stays yours.
A positive wall over the state limits is work for an MDH-licensed asbestos contractor, unless an owner living in a single-family house does the work. MDH still strongly recommends a licensed contractor even then. Your remodeler, electrician and plumber hold off until the asbestos has been removed from that section.
Before you sign, collect two or more bids and ask for the work plan in writing, as MDH advises. Then look at credentials. The contractor should show its Minnesota license, and the workers and supervisor their certificates. Once the wall is clear, keep the permit MDH issued, every waste manifest and the lab’s report on the air samples with your remodel papers.
